Bill Nelson is a native of Richmond, Virginia. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University, earning a BFA in 1970. His name appears in the University's promotional materials as a distinguished alumnus. After working as a local newspaper illustrator of a short time, Nelson established his own studio and has since produced an impressive array of work. His clients have included Time, Newsweek, The Washington Post Magazine, Maximum Golf, US Magazine, and the The New Yorker, among others. In 1986 he published the book Finishing the Hat, The Illustrations of Bill Nelson. Within one year of its publication it sold out and went into a second printing. The book is now out of print. |
| Nelson's Illustration has won over 500
accolades including two gold medals from the New York Art Director's Club,
and two silver medals from the Society of Illustrators, which used one of
the winning pieces for the cover of their 28th Annual. More than 200
National Awards of Merit and Excellence have been granted Nelson from
within the industry by the The Society of Illustrators, Communication
Arts, Print, Graphic, and others. Both Step-by-Step Graphic,
and American Artist have featured his work in depth. He is
now a Director at Large for the Colored Pencil Society of America, an
organization that made him their first president in 1989. He has
also exhibited in numerous galleries and museums throughout the country,
including the Norman Rockwell Museum, where he exhibited a series of Big
Band illustrations created for the US Postal Service.
In addition to teaching at the college level for three years, Nelson has served on several Boards of Humanities involved in the introduction of art to young people. While living in Richmond he was chosen to be a "Virginia Hero". Began by the late Arthur Ashe (also from Richmond), Virginia Heroes is an organization that brings professionals with outstanding career achievements together with inner city youths for a day of questions and one-on-one dialogue. Nelson spent his day with the kids in the company of Katie Couric, also a Virginia Hero. Nelson is a nationally recognized doll-maker. His one of a kind art dolls have made their way into the private collections of Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, David Copperfield, Bruce Willis, and Richard Simmons, among others. He has also served on the standards committee for the National Institute of American Doll Artists. Bill Nelson is listed in Who's Who in America. He currently lives and works in North Carolina. |
